Sandviken is an urban area located in Gästrikland, Sweden. With approximately 25 000 inhabitants, Sandviken is Sweden's 51st largest town.
Sandviken is perhaps best known for the steel company Sandvik, which the town literally grew up around. The ironworks was founded in 1862 by Göran Fredrik Göransson, who was the first in the world to use the Bessemer process successfully on an industrial scale – and Sandvik is still one of Sweden's most well-known industrial names today. Sandviken is also a genuine bandy stronghold, and a match with Sandvikens AIK at Göransson Arena is a real experience during the winter season. Even if you are not into steel or sports, there is much more to see in Sandviken. You can, among other things, visit the historic ironworks village Högbo Bruk with its trails and cafés, or enjoy the beaches along the lake Storsjön.
